“You’ll never achieve that” – Arne Slot’s blunt admission hints at early regret from Liverpool

Arne Slot has admitted he will “probably never reach perfection” as Liverpool manager but there are clear areas of the team he wants to improve.

The Dutchman has made an excellent start to life as Liverpool manager since Jürgen Klopp took over, winning eight of his first nine games in all competitions.

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League and have won each of their first two Champions League games this season, while they beat West Ham 5-1 in the third round of the EFL Cup.

But even after Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Serie A side Bologna in the Champions League, Slot reflected on where he can improve his team to mount a title challenge throughout the season.

“We can improve, we need to improve, that’s clear, but there are also a lot of positives that we can take from tonight and from the other games too,” Slot said (via Liverpool’s official website).

“There was a phase in the game where we had no control and they threatened us more than I would have liked, but that is normal too. I saw a lot of games yesterday, I saw a few games before that, in the Champions League (and) it’s never just one team playing – it’s always two teams playing.

“I think we were in control for most of the game, we had more possession, but they threatened us a few times, especially in the latter stages of the first half.”

Arne Slot joins Liverpool

Although he always strives to improve his team, Slot is keenly aware that perfection is an unattainable fallacy often used by those unwilling to take risks.

Furthermore, Liverpool’s defeat to Forest at Anfield earlier this season was a timely reminder of how quickly things can go wrong in football, no matter how well things seem to be going.

“The thing is, you’ll probably never reach perfection,” Slot admitted. “You always strive for perfection, but you will never achieve it.”

Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League this Saturday.
