Yosemite National Park: Rare snow in August

play

A rare blanket of snow could turn California’s High Sierras white this weekend, with forecasters predicting a quick blanket of snow at elevations above 8,000 feet by Saturday evening, August 24.

The weather forecast updated Thursday by the National Weather Service in Hanford on social media site X included a warning to drivers that the weather could cause slippery roads and reduced visibility along the Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park. Even though there is little snow, hikers and campers should be prepared for wintry conditions, it added.

Areas in Yosemite National Park affected by the advisory include Tioga Pass, Tuolumne Meadows and Vogelsang.

How rarely does it snow in August?

In an earlier X-post, the Hanford Weather Service said it hadn’t snowed in the area in nearly 20 years.

Park officials advise anyone planning to camp, hike or drive in the park on Friday and Saturday to exercise caution.

Kris Mattarochia, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said a team of meteorologists in the agency’s Hanford office examined records and found that Yosemite has had measurable snowfall about 10 times in the past 100 years. The last time the park experienced unusually cold weather in August was 21 years ago, in 2003, Mattarochia told SF Gate.
