New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. expressed confidence after having a controversial base stolen during the team’s 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

“Nobody could throw me out,” Chisholm told reporters after the game (1:20). “Yeah, that’s not happening.”

“I knew I was in,” he said, via Jorge Castillo of ESPN. “That’s exactly what we talked about at second base. (Massey) said, ‘I’ve had a good day.’ I said, ‘You’ve had a good day. That doesn’t mean I’m out.’”

Chisholm’s stolen base in the game’s seventh inning was challenged by the Royals, but the decision stood after replay.

Chisholm also praised his teammate Alex Verdugo to reporters after the game:

We all know Alex Verdugo – he had big moments and played for big teams. This isn’t for him. I was just talking to someone right before I came here. That’s what he lives for. He’s played in big cities – Boston, LA, and I’m not talking about the Angels. So for me he did that. He’s almost a career .300 hitter. He’s done it before. I love it. Verdugo is my man and I will always have his back.

It was an extremely important decision, as the 26-year-old ended up getting the go-ahead run for New York after a two-out single from Verdugo.

Kansas City failed to score in the remaining two innings and faced a 1-0 deficit early in the series.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro disagreed with the decision at second base after the replay.

“I didn’t get any explanation,” Quatraro told the media after the game. “I think we had a really good argument to overturn it.”

Chisholm went 1-4 in the opening game of the series, as he was one of six members of New York’s lineup to record a goal.

Chisholm’s speed on the base paths was one of the main reasons the Yankees acquired him in a trade with the Miami Marlins on July 27. He finished the regular season with 40 steals, the sixth-best mark in the majors.

New York will look to take a commanding 2-0 series lead in Game 2 at home on Monday at 7:38 p.m. ET.
