World Central Kitchen is mobilizing in Asheville to feed families amid crisis

World Central Kitchen, a global food nonprofit, has arrived in Asheville to distribute thousands of meals to families in need. Founded by renowned chef José Andrés, the organization is known worldwide for its rapid response to crises.

At 9 a.m., one of World Central Kitchen’s helicopters was stationed in an empty parking lot in downtown Asheville, preparing to fly into otherwise inaccessible communities. Crews were seen loading up sandwiches and water, marking the start of a major mobilization effort.

“We have explored a number of areas and are now bringing food there,” said Charlie Shed of World Central Kitchen. “Then we have an army of trucks going to the people.”

Shed mentioned that the Chaney Brothers are supplying the food and plan to deliver it to Black Mountain and other remote areas in Swannanoa.

At Bear’s BBQ in Asheville’s South Slope, local chefs, restaurant staff and volunteers work together to prepare and package meals. Drea Jackson, a volunteer, said: “We were walking the dogs this morning and saw the helicopter landing so we just decided to help.”

José Andrés, who has been instrumental in disaster relief efforts across the country, was seen at Bear’s BBQ before boarding the helicopter to fly to Swannanoa and Black Mountain. “The worst thing is what happens afterwards,” said Andrés, referring to the consequences of crises. “The teams always follow; Unfortunately this time it’s Asheville.”

Andrés emphasized the importance of providing immediate assistance. “If they need our help – food and water – we can bring them. I have solar lamps that people need in our early days,” he said. “It’s hard to see people suffering, and it takes so little to provide comfort.”

Moments later, Andrés and his team took off in the helicopter and embarked on the first of many journeys to deliver much-needed care and food to affected communities.
