According to multiple reports, a 57-year-old woman died at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport after she was found trapped in a baggage conveyor belt.

Police told ABC News that surveillance footage from Terminal 5, where international flights are handled, showed the unnamed woman entering “an unoccupied restricted area at 2:27 a.m.” on Thursday.

A Labor Department spokesperson told the outlet that the woman was not an airport employee.

The exact time when she became entangled in the machinery is not known. She was only discovered five hours later at 7:30 a.m., police told the news agency.

Emergency crews arrived around 7:45 a.m. and found the woman “trapped in a machine” and “caught in the conveyor belt system” used to transport luggage, the Chicago Fire Department told ABC News.

Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, told The Guardian that the woman was found trapped in a baggage conveyor system in an area inaccessible to passengers.

According to the media, her death was confirmed at the scene.

Police are currently investigating what happened in the five hours between the timestamp of the surveillance footage and the arrival of emergency services.

Nathaniel Blackman, a Chicago police spokesman, told the Associated Press that the surveillance cameras were not viewed in real time, adding that investigators only became aware of the footage after the woman was pronounced dead.

This is not the first time someone has been seriously injured by airport machinery. The Daily Mail reported that a baggage handler at London Heathrow Airport suffered brain damage in February after her scarf got caught in a conveyor belt.

Jasbir Sahota, who has worked at the airport for 30 years, was unloading luggage from a Loganair flight when the accident occurred, the outlet reported.

Last year, a 57-year-old woman had to have her leg amputated after it became trapped in a moving walkway at Bangkok airport.

In 2013, a five-month-old boy was killed on a baggage carousel at Spain’s Alicante-Elche airport because his mother placed his baby carrier on the conveyor belt.

Representatives from Chicago O’Hare International Airport and the Chicago Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Chicago Fire Department could not be reached.
