Why does Walmart bake its own bread?

A Walmart customer jokingly accused the store of misleading advertising after finding a sign saying that too much bread had been “baked.”

TikTok user Tyler Elliott (@tylerelliottcomedy) is a comedian who posts about everyday life on the social media platform. He recently posted a video from the Walmart bakery section that has since garnered more than 333,000 views.

In the video, Elliott shows a shelf full of loaves of bread. A sign on the shelf reads, “We baked too much. Now you can save even more on these discounted baked goods.” Viewers can hear Elliott sarcastically criticizing the store for its mistake. “You baked too much, you (expletive) idiots. You baked way too much. Now look at you. Embarrassing.”

In an interview with the Daily Dot, Elliott wrote, “It’s funny that they say, ‘Oops, we baked too much!’ But you have several metal racks and a printed sign pointing out your mistake? Just make less?”

Viewers comment on the signage

In the comments, users agreed that the amount of bread on display was exaggerated. Other users expressed skepticism that the bread was actually baked by someone associated with Walmart.

“This is really waaaaaar too much,” wrote one user.

A second user joked: “You misspelled ‘defrosted’.”

Another person said: “They’re making us believe they’re actually baking the bread haha.”

Someone else said, “I bake the whole recipe every time instead of halving it.”

However, one user speculated that the sign might not be dishonest after all. “They shape the dough and freeze it, they have to let it rise, spray it, let it rise and then bake it, so it’s freshly baked but not freshly MADE,” they wrote.

Does Walmart bake its own bread?

This is a question that is frequently asked by internet users. According to the blog BestLife, many of the baked goods at Walmart are not made fresh, as evidenced by several Walmart bakery employees on TikTok. “However, one advantage of the previously frozen bread is that it is affordable,” the article states.

Last summer, a TikTok user sparked a discussion about Walmart bread by sharing that she buys pre-sliced Italian bread from the bakery there for $1. While it doesn’t taste quite like a regular bread from the supermarket, she reported that it doesn’t taste bad when toasted for a sandwich. Some of the platform’s more budget-conscious users even buy their bread at Dollar Tree.
