Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USAvisited the University of Pittsburgh as part of his “You’re Being Brainwashed” tour to speak to students about controversial topics such as the war in Ukraine and transgender issues. About 250 attendees, including university students, high school students and parents, gathered in Crumley Park, where Kirk sat under a tent with a sign reading “Prove Me Wrong.” Many attendees, some wearing “Make America Great Again” hats, cheered Kirk during his debates.
Kirk’s visit comes at a time when the new academic year and election cycle coincide, heightening tensions over issues being debated on campuses across the country. In a press release, he emphasized the dangers of misinformation on campuses and online, claiming that falsehoods are being spread on an unprecedented scale. Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, is dedicated to educating and training students to promote the principles of freedom, free markets and limited government, and has active chapters across the country.
The tour focuses on the challenge of “left orthodoxies” in Higher educationgiving students the opportunity to learn about different perspectives. This is in line with Kirk’s mission to freedom of expressionwhich he sees as fundamental to Western freedom. Kirk’s debate videos, which often feature controversial exchanges with students, have been viewed millions of times online and have contributed to his growing influence in conservative circles.
Colten Marshall, president of the university’s Turning Point USA chapter, moderated the event and said his goal was to create a space for conservative students to form a community and express their views freely. He acknowledged that while not everyone would agree with Kirk’s views, he wanted to make sure diverse voices were heard on campus.
Students attending the event expressed varying opinions. Participating university student Raed Safdar found the debates entertaining but also somewhat unbalanced, with inexperienced students struggling to match Kirk’s debating skills in front of a large audience. Another attendee, Jackson Hopkins, echoed this sentiment, noting that Kirk’s extensive experience gave him a clear advantage over less experienced student debaters.
The event sparked a discussion about the value of a college education. The local Turning Point group even urged its followers to “prove Charlie wrong” when she said college was a scam. While some students, like Safdar, acknowledged that a college education can be valuable, especially in fields like engineering, they also noted that the high tuition often makes the return on the investment questionable, echoing Kirk’s criticism.
