Who will win on Monday Night Football?

The Detroit Lions have lost early home games to the Seattle Seahawks in two straight seasons, and Dan Campbell’s team has lost to the Hawks overall in three straight seasons.

But out is cheerful Pete Carroll for Seattle and in is former Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as head coach for a Monday Night Football showdown (8:15 p.m., ABC, ESPN+) to conclude Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season .

Our Free Press sports writers take a look at the tasty matchup:

The Seahawks have had the Lions’ number most recently, with wins over the past three seasons by a combined score of 136-105, but I think this game will be different. Under old coach Pete Carroll, the Lions struggled with Seattle’s rushing attack, but under Macdonald the scheme has changed and the Lions are playing defense as well as anyone in the NFL right now.

This won’t be child’s play. Kenneth Walker III brings balance to Seattle’s offense, DK Metcalf is a dangerous receiver and the Seahawks have the personnel to make life difficult for Jared Goff. But on Monday night, with the home crowd behind them, I think the more experienced Lions will emerge victorious. The choice: Lions 24, Seahawks 20.

It’s a Monday night game at Ford Field and the stadium noise is already ringing in my ears. That should help, especially for a Lions defense that got off to a good start but has suddenly turned into a MASH unit. Meanwhile, the offense was disappointing. Not a good sign for the Lions, who are trying to end a six-game losing streak against the red-hot Seahawks, whose offense and defense are both ranked in the top 10. The choice: Seahawks 29, Lions 25.

The Lions should have two goals going into this game: get the win and no more damn injuries. But I believe this Lions team is built to overcome adversity. Just bring the nearest guy and hook him up. Depending on who can play, that depth will be tested. But the Lions have enough talent to overcome that. The choice: Lions 27, Seahawks 21.

Dan Campbell finally beats Seattle. Defense is the reason. With Frank Ragnow out, the Lions won’t be able to run the ball as easily. Jared Goff will make just enough throws and the defense will make just enough stops. The choice: Lions 23, Seahawks 20.
