Who is Jack Tuttle? Michigan football QB takes over for Alex Orji

Michigan football had yet to find a definitive answer at quarterback through the first five weeks of the college football season.

But Sherrone Moore and Co. may have found a long-term solution at the position against Washington in Jack Tuttle.

The 6-foot-4 quarterback entered last season’s national championship rematch in the second quarter when Moore benched Michigan starter Alex Orji with the Wolverines then losing 14-0 to the Huskies. Tuttle took advantage of his opportunity and led the Wolverines to score 17 unanswered points.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tuttle, including his eligibility for his seventh college football season:

Who is Jack Tuttle?

Jack Tuttle is currently a seventh-year quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines.

A native of San Marcos, California, he was a former four-star recruit and the eighth-ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class, according to his 247Sports Composite Rankings profile. He originally committed to and enrolled in Utah in 2018 , but transferred to Indiana after not seeing any playing time that year.

Tuttle spent four seasons in Indiana from 2019 to 2022, where he played a total of 15 games for the Hoosiers. He transferred to Michigan before last season, where he served as one of the Wolverines’ backup players for current Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy. Tuttle appeared in five games for Michigan last season and completed 88.2% of his passes for 130 yards and one touchdown – the latter against his former squad.

Tuttle missed much of the Wolverines’ spring and fall practices earlier this season, which left him unable to compete for the Week 1 starting spot, The Detroit Free Press previously reported.

Eligibility for seventh-year Jack Tuttle

As previously reported by The Detroit Free Press, Tuttle was medically redshirted by the NCAA in February for his seventh year of eligibility. Tuttle’s medical redshirt year is for the 2022 season, as he was sidelined with a season-ending injury on Nov. 15 against Penn State.
