When to prepare your trees as a storm brews in the Gulf

DAPHNE, Alabama (WKRG) – Storm warnings and a strong hurricane season are leading to an increase in calls to local tree care companies.

Many homeowners ask the same question: “When is it too late to prepare your home and trees for severe weather?”

Many homeowners hire professionals to trim branches or remove dead trees, but Chris Francis, lead arborist at Chris Francis Tree Care, says by the time a storm is approaching, it’s probably too late.

Francis said when the threat of a storm is mentioned, his company’s call volume typically increases by about 50 percent. When a storm hits the Gulf of Mexico, he said call volume more than doubles.

“The closer the storm comes, the more desperate people become, the more they want to call, and frankly, by then it’s too late,” Francis said.

Francis said it is important to prepare trees before hurricane season begins to prevent storm damage.

“I would say they absolutely need to find a certified arborist, someone who really knows what they’re doing, and consult with them, plan ahead and hire someone to think ahead about what to do with the trees,” Francis said.
