When does daylight saving time end?

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 3. Then, clocks will go back an hour on Saturday night. Your cell phone should automatically adjust for daylight saving time because it’s built into the operating system. However, other clocks will need to be adjusted manually. The end of daylight saving time will move both sunrise and sunset forward an hour. On the East Coast, that means sunrises will be closer to 6:30 a.m. and sunsets will move to around 4:30 p.m. (around 4:15 p.m. after Thanksgiving).

The good thing about it: everyone gets an extra hour of sleep this Sunday.

Do all states observe daylight saving time?

Daylight saving time was introduced in the United States in 1918 and is now observed in all states except Hawaii and Arizona – with the exception of the Navajo Nation. Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands – all U.S. territories – also do not observe the tradition.

The debate over ending biannual daylight saving time continues. A bill to implement year-round daylight saving time languished in Congress for months before being officially killed in January 2023, though efforts to revive the legislation continue.

Can the time change affect your mood?

As daylight saving time ends and the days get shorter, mood swings are inevitable, experts say. The shorter days combined with colder temperatures can affect people in a variety of ways, including changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, and a loss of interest in activities they normally enjoy. Additionally, about 5 percent of Americans experience seasonal affective disorder.

Here’s why: Reduced exposure to sunlight lowers our active levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that creates a long-lasting feeling of happiness or well-being, which makes us sadder. At the same time, the brain produces more melatonin, a compound that helps you fall asleep, when it’s dark, which explains why we often feel sleepier in months with fewer daylight hours. Time changes like daylight saving time can also affect our circadian rhythms: internal clocks that control sleep. Everyone’s circadian rhythm is closely linked to their mood, meaning that as their sleep routine changes, their mood can change too.

What about September and October?

Towards the end of September, sunrises approach 6:45 a.m. In October, the sun rises after 7:15 a.m.

In mid-September the sun sets before 7 p.m., and in October at 6:30 p.m. In some areas the sun has already set at 5:40 p.m. by the end of October.

When does summer time start again?

Daylight saving time begins again on March 9, 2025.
