What they’re saying about Jeremy Swayman signing a long-term deal with the Bruins

The Jeremy Swayman saga came to an end on Sunday morning when the goaltender signed an eight-year contract to remain with the Boston Bruins.

The two teams were at odds throughout the summer before agreeing to a contract worth $8.25 million annually. Swayman missed all of training camp and preseason but trained at Boston University. And while Joonas Korpisalo is still expected to be Boston’s starter against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, Swayman’s suspension ends all speculation about who the No. 1 goalie will be on offense.

Here’s what people have around. The NHL comments on Swayman’s new contract with the Bruins.

Matt Vautour, MassLive

“Swayman’s contract pays him like a No. 1 goalie after the Bruins made offseason moves that reflected their belief he could handle the larger role. Boston traded 2022-23 Vezina Trophy-winning Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators in the offseason, further solidifying their commitment to Swayman, an Alaska native who played collegiately at Maine.”

Ty Anderson, 98.5 The Sports Center

“In a season that ended with Swayman establishing himself as Boston’s true No. 1 goaltender during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the 25-year-old Swayman put together a campaign that included a 25-10-8 record and a Save percentage of .916 featured 44 games for the Bruins. For his efforts, Swayman, who was also named to the 2024 All-Star Game, placed seventh in voting for the Vezina Trophy.”

Fluto Shinzawa, Pierre LeBrun, Shayna Goldman – The Athletic

“The agreement defines Swayman as the Bruins’ No. 1 goaltender for the first time in his career – for today and tomorrow. For the last three seasons, Swayman shared the net with Linus Ullmark. Swayman’s postseason surge against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers helped convince Boston to trade Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators.”

Conor Ryan, Boston.com

“Swayman may be in uncharted territory when it comes to his workload this season, as his career high in games played was just 44 last season. But the former fourth-round pick’s stock skyrocketed at the end of the 2023-24 season thanks to a strong postseason performance.

“Although Swayman again shared teams with Ullmark during the regular season, he ended up starting in 12 of Boston’s 13 playoff games against Toronto and Florida – with a save percentage of .933.”

Evan Marinofsky, New England Hockey Journal

“It’s a gamble by the Bruins, but it makes sense. Yes, Jeremy Swayman may not be worth exactly $8.25 million right now. Still, he expects it to be worth that (and more) in the coming years. The hope is that it will prove to be even more valuable later on.”

Nick Goss, NBC Sports Boston

“The foundation of great Bruins teams over the last 15 years or so has been strong goaltending. Tim Thomas, Tuukka Rask and Linus Ullmark all won the Vezina Trophy during this time. After trading Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators in July and now handing Swayman the largest goaltending contract in the team’s history, the Bruins have officially turned the net over to the former University of Maine star.”
