What needs to happen for the Arizona Diamondbacks to make the playoffs?

play

The Arizona Diamondbacks have lost five of their last six games, but there are still several scenarios in which they could get into the postseason, including some in which they don’t win their season finale on Sunday afternoon against the San Diego Padres.

Of course they are in a difficult position. They’re trying to beat either the Atlanta Braves or the New York Mets and clinch a wild card spot, but both teams have a tiebreaker against them, meaning they have to finish with a better record than both. FanGraphs puts his playoff odds at 39.6 percent. The Braves, who face the Royals on Sunday, are at 97.1 percent; the Mets, playing the Brewers, are at 63.3 percent.

Here’s a look at what could happen in the next two days.

How the Diamondbacks can advance to the postseason if they win on Sunday:

*The Braves win and the Mets win on Sunday: The Diamondbacks would only get in if the Mets are defeated in Monday’s doubleheader.

*The Braves win and the Mets lose: The Diamondbacks would get in if the Mets lose either game on Monday.

*The Braves lose and the Mets win: The Diamondbacks would get in if either team sweeps the doubleheader.

How the Diamondbacks could fare if they lose on Sunday:

*The Braves win and the Mets lose: The Diamondbacks would need the Braves to win the doubleheader.

*The Braves lose and the Mets lose: The Diamondbacks would need the Braves to sweep.

Could the Diamondbacks be eliminated on Sunday?

Yes, the Diamondbacks could be eliminated on Sunday if they lose and the Mets win, regardless of what happens with the Braves.
