We’re still watching the Gulf and Kirk is a hurricane

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –

There remains a moderate chance of tropical development in the Gulf next week. Forecast models assume that the low point in the Gulf will be reached by the end of the week. Will it be a tropical cyclone? It’s possible, but it could just be a specific area of low pressure. Regardless, model guidance tends to do whatever it needs to to combat wind shear that could distort its circulation and keep it weak and disorganized. It could also meander through the Gulf for days before a cold front potentially steers it further east toward Florida. In this case there will be no local impact.

Conclusion: The outcome remains questionable. Our First Alert Weather Team will continue to monitor forecast trends, so please be aware that changes are possible. Stay tuned for updates.

HURRICANE KIRK

In case you missed it, Kirk becomes a hurricane on Tuesday. It is expected to reach major hurricane status by the end of the week (making it the third major hurricane of the season). Fortunately, it will not threaten the United States or any other land mass. So this will be a “fish storm”.

WHAT NEXT

There’s probably a chance there could be unrest behind Kirk. If it gets a name, it will be called Leslie. It has a lower latitude and is therefore definitely worth a watch. Sometimes lower latitude systems have a better chance of moving further west than heading back out to sea (but this depends on steering currents). As things stand now, it won’t be a threat to the Gulf, but it is one that the east coast of Florida needs to keep an eye on. However, things could certainly change as we’ll be keeping an eye on Kirk well into next week. So stay tuned to our First Alert Weather Team for updates.
