Oregon football returns home for its Big Ten opener in Week 6 and will face a program nearly 2,350 miles from Autzen Stadium.

The No. 6 Ducks (4-0, 1-0 in Big Ten play) host Michigan State (3-2, 1-1) on Friday, Oct. 4, in an unofficially coined “Big Ten Under Dark.” ” contest at 9 p.m. ET at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon.

Led by Oklahoma quarterback transfer Dillon Gabriel, Dan Lanning’s squad rose from No. 7 to No. 6 in the US LBM Coaches Poll this week after posting a 34-13 win over UCLA in Week 5. Through the first five weeks of the college football season, Gabriel and Oregon have compiled the No. 20 passing offense in the country.

The Spartans, meanwhile, are coming off a lopsided loss to No. 3 Ohio State last week. Former Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith is in his first season on the East Lansing sideline. Michigan State enters Friday winless in three road games at Autzen Stadium and Eugene.

Michigan State University head coach Jonathan Smith is 2-4 all-time against Oregon in his seven-year coaching career. All previous games came while Smith was coaching at Oregon State.

Smith was hired from Michigan State in November by Oregon State, then Oregon’s Pac-12 rival, to replace Mel Tucker.

“Smith got the Spartans going early with the Chiles scoring early points and the defense keeping the Ducks from making big plays down the field. But in the second half, Gabriel and Co. make adjustments to get the ball moving, and Oregon’s defense – with a big play from Harmon – wear down the weakened MSU offensive line and hand the Spartans a third straight loss. “

“Michigan State University’s mistakes will come. In the four games against FBS teams – and the scrimmage against Prairie View – the Spartans have turned it over three times in three of them and four times against Boston College. The penalties have slowed down – five in the last two games after being hit 33 times in the first three games – but unlike Michigan State, Gabriel still wasn’t anything special, the running game was solid and the offense seemed to be finding its rhythm to have found.
