We got 17 pieces of sushi for just over 2,000 yen at this restaurant in Fukuoka

Each piece of sushi costs 110 yen. All.

The Japanese city of Fukuoka is best known for its dishes popular with Japanese taxi drivers, such as tonkotsu ramen and mentaiko, but did you know that it’s also a great place to eat seafood? Its proximity to the sea means that fish and shellfish dishes range from gourmet to super cheap.

You know that the team at SoraNews24 is all about getting the best for our yen. So when we heard about a restaurant where each type of sushi costs only 110 yen (0.75 US dollars)our Japanese-speaking reporter Takashi Harada knew he had to try it out.

The restaurant in question is called Hakata Toyoichi and is located in Bayside Place next to the Hakata Ferry Terminal in Fukuoka.

You can go straight from the boat into the restaurant.

However, this is no secret among tourists visiting Fukuoka: even though Takashi arrived shortly before opening time at 11 a.m., a considerable queue had already formed.

Takashi waited in the hope of getting a seat next to the first guests, but luck was not on his side that day. Although the person in front of him was able to get a seat, Takashi was asked to wait 30 minutes.

On the plus side, Toyoichi also has a takeaway section. Time is money, so Takashi went to the takeaway section instead. There is a separate, semi-open seating area near the restaurant where food is allowed, so he planned to eat there.

▼ Sushi outdoors!

In retrospect, he was glad he had decided to take it with him instead, because the sight was something very special. Box after box of different types of sushi were lined up, just waiting to be mixed and put together in a personalized to-go box. It was like a sushi theme park.

In addition to common varieties such as maguro and salmon, Hakata Toyoichi also offers some rarer sushi varieties such as whelks (tsubugai), cutlass fish (Subscribe) and filefish skin (kawahagi).

The rarest varieties were marked with the characters “珍味” in the upper right corner, which means “rare taste”.

▼ This razor claim (mategai) Sushi had a prominent label claiming it was “delicious!! and hard to get.”

▼ The one that was already completely empty? Fatty tuna.

Takashi fully understood why this take-out sushi buffet option is so popular, especially among international tourists. It’s a great way to try many types of sushi at an affordable price.

▼ There are also many signs in Korean and English.

▼ In total, Takashi collected 17 pieces of sushi for only 2,032 yen.

He had to buy soy sauce and wasabi separately, so it came to just over 110 yen a piece. He figured that was about as much as he would spend at a revolving sushi restaurant.

He was delighted by how fresh and delicious each piece tasted. He couldn’t believe he was able to get all of this for only 110 yen a piece.

Admittedly, the rice was a little skimpy, but the most important thing about sushi is the seafood, right? If it meant lower prices, Takashi was willing to forgo a few extra grains.

Overall, Takashi was very happy with Hakata Toyoichi’s takeout sushi and would definitely go back. If you plan on stopping by, note that they have irregular closing days and only accept cash.
