Waynesboro golfers finish fourth at WCC meet and third in division

WAYNESBORO – The familiarity of the home course wasn’t enough for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School golf team to earn its first win of the season on Monday, Aug. 19.

Playing at Waynesboro Country Club in the third contest of the Mid-Penn Colonial Division, Waynesboro posted a score of 340 and finished fourth behind undefeated Northern York (328), Gettysburg (338) and Shippensburg (339). Waynesboro is 11-7 and tied with Shippensburg for third place in the division. Gettysburg (12-6) is in second place, while Northern – the defending champion – is 18-0.

The medalist was Logan White of Northern, who scored 74. Tyler Fortney of Waynesboro, the medalist of the first two games, finished second overall with 75 points.

Waynesboro’s next three scorers were Caiden Shacreaw (85), Abby Byers (89) and Farin Parks (91).

“I’m very proud and grateful to have this team,” Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson said. “I have several young, talented players. Tyler is the leader. He’s played very well in the first three games. It’s too early for any major rankings in the Mid-Penn at this point, but Tyler is certainly a fantastic player and probably in the top five in the Mid-Penn.

“Farin Parks has improved from last year. He’s consistently playing in the top three. Caiden Shacreaw, a freshman, has shown real potential. I’m excited to watch his development over the next few years. Abby Byers is one of my returning players. Her game is a little inconsistent right now, so we’re working on her scoring consistency. Landon Crable is also a returning player who has played in the top five in every game.

“Rylan Nichols is a new player this year and shows great potential. Marissa Musolino is back as a senior. She will probably qualify for the postseason. Dominic Goodrich is a new player this year who is working on improving his game. I only have eight players on the roster.”

Waynesboro finished third in the season opener at Greencastle Golf Club. Fortney had a team-best 77 points. In the second game at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg, Fortney followed up with an impressive 69 points.

The next competition will take place on Thursday, August 22nd, at the Gettysburg National Golf Club in Fairfield.
