Watertown High School girls tennis team makes its home debut

WATERTOWN – The Watertown High School girls tennis team split two matches Monday in the first of its three scheduled home games of the 2024 season.

After a narrow 5-4 loss to O’Gorman, the Arrows (3-2) bounced back to defeat Sioux Falls Washington 8-1. O’Gorman, now 4-1, swept Washington 9-0 in the middle matchup.

“I’m really proud of the girls today. They played a great match against a strong O’Gorman team and came up just short. There were a lot of close games that could have gone either way,” said Watertown coach Ryan Zink. “Then we played Washington and got a nice win.”

Cayda Weiss and Jade Smith, Watertown’s fifth- and sixth-tier singles players, each achieved a score of 2-0 on the day, as did Ellie Zink and Leyla Meester in No. 1 doubles and Weiss and Smith in No. 3 doubles.

The Arrows will face Brookings and Aberdeen Central at the Brookings Jamboree on Saturday.

Watertown’s only other scheduled home games this fall include a home game against Milbank on Tuesday, September 10, and the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament on Monday and Tuesday, September 30-October 1.
