Washington Commanders LB Frankie Luvu has career game in win against Cleveland Browns

The Washington Commanders emerged victorious in their 34-13 victory over the Cleveland Browns, where linebacker Frankie Luvu had a career day.

Luvu recorded a career-high 2.5 sacks against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson in the win, but he thinks the defense has more to show for it.

“We knew they were pretty banged up on offense on their side of the ball as O-linemen, so we used that as an advantage as a defensive line trying to get after them,” Luvu said after the game. “We have it on our shoulders as a defense, you know, this is the game where we can move forward from where we were last week. We’re just getting started and we’ll go from there.”

The defense was ranked 32nd in the NFL last season, but each week they have started to make improvements. Over the last two weeks, the Commanders have allowed 14 points or fewer, something that would have been hard to imagine from Washington’s defense a year ago.

As the Commanders’ defense improves, they are getting some love from the offense and coaching staff.

“He brings energy to our team and incredible support,” said coach Dan Quinn. “So his ability to create disruptive plays in the future, his physicality.” And so last week was the kind of catalyst I thought, the forced fumble and recovery of a big game in front of us. Today I felt more of his presence as he honestly went forward and pushed the passer to make some plays in that direction. But he brings a lot to our team.”

Luvu and the Commanders’ defense will hope to continue their strong play in Week 6 as they face a big test against reigning MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
