Sunshine boosts sales in UK supermarkets but Asda struggles, says NIQ
Warm weather and household shopping ahead of the summer holidays boosted sales growth at UK supermarkets in August, although third-biggest supermarket Asda continued to struggle, industry data showed. Market research firm NIQ said sales at UK supermarkets rose 5.5% year-on-year in the four weeks to August 10, up from 3.6% growth in last month’s report.

Israeli retailer Shufersal increases profits by 132% in the second quarter, sales rise
Israel’s largest supermarket chain Shufersal reported a more than doubling of quarterly profit, thanks to higher sales and cost-cutting measures. In its first results following a change in ownership this year, Shufersal posted a second-quarter net profit of NIS 169 million ($46 million), up 132 percent from a year earlier. Sales rose 7.9 percent to NIS 4 billion in the April-June period, while store sales rose 8.7 percent.

Waitrose announces plans for 100 new stores across the UK
Waitrose has announced plans to open up to 100 convenience stores in the UK over the next five years, part of a £1 billion investment in its supermarket chain. The first new Waitrose store in six years is due to open in Hampton Hill, London, later this year, followed by more in the capital and across the country.

Walmart, the largest shareholder in Chinese e-commerce company JD.com, has sold its entire stake, a person familiar with the matter said, ending an eight-year investment to focus on its own business in China. A placement of Walmart shares is fully subscribed, the person said, and would be worth $3.74 billion at the top end of the range being offered.
