Following last year’s ceremony in Newark, New Jersey, the MTV Video Music Awards return to the UBS Arena in New York. The event, hosted by Megan Thee Stallion, begins at 6 p.m. ET with the 2024 VMAs red carpet and recognizes excellence in music with performances by Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Lenny Kravitz and Katy Perry. Taylor Swift leads the nominations with 12, while Post Malone is behind with 11 and Eminem with eight. Carpenter, Megan Thee Stallion and Ariana Grande each received seven nominations. Perry will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Last year’s red carpet featured some notable style icons, from Doja Cat’s sheer, spider-web-inspired Monse gown to Olivia Rodrigo’s beaded Ludovic de Saint Sernin bodycon. The sheer trend was popular, and Emily Ratajkowski’s archival Jean Paul Gaultier and Megan’s Brandon Blackwood fit and flare were a perfect fit. Cardi B rocked cult designer Dilara Findikoglu, while Nicki Minaj wore Dolce & Gabbana for her bridal look.
Fast forward 40 years and the VMAs have given us many memorable fashion moments, from Janet Jackson’s jumpsuit in 1993 to Gwyneth Paltrow’s oft-mentioned red velvet Gucci suit by Tom Ford in 1996. And who could forget Pamela Anderson’s oversized furry pink hat in 1999 or Lil’ Kim’s one-of-a-kind pasty that same year? In this century, however, the VMAs have given us Lady Gaga’s inimitable meat dress.
