Ja’Marr Chase lost his nerve at a crucial moment as the Cincinnati Bengals faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
The star wide receiver picked up a flag after berating a referee for not calling a flag after being thrown hard to the ground. That flag pushed the Bengals back 15 yards and made scoring difficult, and Cincinnati had to settle for a field goal a few plays later.
Chase then threw his helmet on the ground while head coach Zac Taylor tried to calm him down.
It was a frustrating day for Chase, and the no-call and flag only added to his frustration. Chase had just four pass catches for 35 yards on the week after recording just six pass catches for 62 yards in a loss to the New England Patriots.
Those shaky early-season performances won’t help him as he looks to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid wide receivers, which may have led to his frustrations on the field on Sunday.
Chase isn’t the only Bengals player who has had a frustrating start to the season; the entire team has struggled.
Cincinnati suffered a surprise loss to the New England Patriots in Week 1. The Bengals then lost their Week 2 game to the Chiefs in heartbreaking fashion when Harrison Butker made a walk-off field goal.
