Vice President Criticizes Donald Trump’s ‘Insensitivity’ to Hurricane Falsehoods and Praises Maya Rudolph’s ‘SNL’ Portrayal of Her

UPDATE, with video: Kamala Harris made her first appearance on The view as the Democratic presidential candidate, in a very friendly environment in which she laid out some of her policy priorities and got the opportunity to respond to her rival Donald Trump’s falsehoods about the administration’s hurricane response.

“This is the height of irresponsibility and, frankly, insensitivity,” Harris said of Trump’s claims that FEMA funds went to migrants, among others.

“There are literally lives at stake right now,” she said, adding that Trump was “playing political games for his own sake.”

Harris also commented on the approaching Hurricane Milton threatening Central Florida and the claim of the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, who said this morning that she had never called about any of the storms before. She called him “selfish” for not picking up the call.

Harris said she spoke with Democratic and Republican governors during the recent crisis. “Called, answered the call, answered the call, had a conversation,” she said. “So it’s obvious that for certain leaders it’s not about partisanship or politics, but for others it might be.”

She also urged residents of the state to follow evacuation orders and warned that the hurricane “is expected to be historic given how severe and devastating it will be.”

“I called the governor (DeSantis) to see what Florida received in terms of impacts. We must agree that at some point we will all need to work together to pool resources, particularly federal, state and local resources, to address these types of disasters. I think it’s a shame that didn’t happen, but it has at the local level and with other elected officials in the state.”

Navarro then said, “He will take your call when you are president.”

As the Democratic candidate, Harris met with Oprah Winfrey, but that was a campaign-related event. The view described her appearance as her first live appearance on a talk show since entering the race, but was still showered with support from her co-hosts. Whoopi Goldberg introduced her and Beyonce as the “next President of the United States.” FreedomHarris’ campaign anthem played as she made her way to the set.

The show also gave her the opportunity to introduce a new policy proposal that would expand Medicare benefits to include home health care for seniors.

Harris also noted that one difference from her plans and Joe Biden’s presidency is that she wants a Republican in her Cabinet. “I don’t feel burdened by allowing pride to get in the way of a good idea,” she said.

At the end the show also played a clip from Saturday Night Live and Maya Rudolph’s portrayal of her.

Harris laughed. “She’s so good. She has the whole thing – the suit, the jewelry.” She said she had never seen the clip before.

Harris’ appearance on the show is part of a media campaign this week. She was on her way to The View for an appearance on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show. She is scheduled to appear later today The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
