Union announces withdrawal from mediation with AT&T

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) union announced that it was withdrawing from mediation talks with AT&T, accusing the company of delaying negotiations on a new collective agreement.

The union’s decision comes as thousands of workers continue their strike for the third consecutive week. The strike has impacted several cities, including Atlanta, where workers gathered across the city in protest rallies.

Despite the failure of mediation, AT&T has said it remains interested in a fair deal for its employees. On Tuesday morning, the company sent the following statement:

The Third District of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union has decided that it no longer wishes to use an experienced federal mediator to assist in negotiations.

This decision was unexpected, as withdrawing from mediation does not seem to be consistent with the union’s allegations of unfair labor practices and its stated intention to work toward a mutually acceptable solution.

We thank the mediator for his efforts throughout the process. Regardless of whether a neutral third party is present, there will be no progress without a willingness to compromise.

As we have said from day one, our focus is to reach a fair and competitive agreement that benefits our hard-working employees as quickly as possible. That will not change. In the meantime, we will remain prepared for any eventuality to ensure our customers receive the excellent service they deserve.

The ongoing strike has caused disruption to public services and attracted widespread attention as both sides continue to struggle with contract terms.
