UAlbany spoils Purple Eagle home opener

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The University at Albany defeated the Niagara men’s team 3-2 on Thursday night as the Purple Eagles conceded an own goal in the final minutes of the game, giving the Great Danes the win at Niagara Field. Felix Kogler scored both of the Purple Eagles’ goals in the loss.

How it happened

The Great Danes took the lead in the third minute of the game when Pedro Lucas scored after passes from his teammates Timo Jansen and Lucas Watt.

In the 16th minute of the game, the equalizer was achieved when Felix Kogler shot one into the net and scored his first goal of the season.

The game remained tied until the 72nd minute, when Jansen put UAlbany ahead with a goal from 25 yards.

Niagara got lucky in the 84th minute when the Great Danes were charged with a handball, which led to Kogler’s second goal of the game.

However, the Purple Eagles, who played the final 15-plus minutes of the game with a man down, had to watch as one of their players had the ball bounce off his foot with four minutes left, giving UAlbany the lead and ending the game 3-2.

Niagara Notes

• Thursday’s meeting with UAlbany was the second in as many seasons between the two schools. The Great Danes lead the series 2-0.
• With his brace, Kogler has now scored eight goals in his Purple Eagle career. It was also the second time Kogler scored two goals in a game.
Jamie Barry He made eight saves, just one step shy of his career high of nine saves last season.
Jeremy Talsma And Gerard Lopez Forner made their Purple Eagle debut on Thursday night.
Landon Hungerford played the entire 90 minutes.
