Trump assassination live updates: Suspect Ryan Routh appears in court as Trump breaks his silence

Secret Service reveals how close Donald Trump was to Gulf shooting suspect

Donald Trump was apparently the victim of a second assassination attempt on Sunday at one of his golf courses in Florida, the FBI said.

The former president is safe and unharmed, and the FBI says it is investigating the latest security incident involving the Republican presidential candidate. Just nine weeks earlier, he survived an earlier assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania in which a sniper shot him in the ear.

A man was seen aiming an AK-47 rifle at Trump’s golf resort in West Palm Beach. He was hiding in the bushes about 400 to 500 yards from the politician. As he fled the scene, Secret Service agents spotted him and opened fire.

According to local sheriff Ric Bradshaw, he was later stopped by police in a Nissan SUV and taken into custody in a neighboring county.

The suspect has since been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh (58), who is believed to have criticized Trump on social media and expressed his willingness to “fight and die” in Ukraine, a cause that was apparently very close to his heart.

Routh is currently appearing in court in West Palm Beach.
