Tropical Storm Isaac could become a hurricane in the central Atlantic

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Storm Isaac could develop into a hurricane over the open subtropical Atlantic late Friday or early Saturday. Isaac formed in the central subtropical Atlantic on Wednesday evening, becoming the ninth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The NHC reports that Isaac is rotating in the open waters of the Atlantic more than 800 miles east-northeast of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour.

Isaac is expected to move in the general direction of Europe. The NHC notes that given favorable conditions and the storm’s reasonably defined structure, there is a chance for Isaac to strengthen.

Will Europe experience impacts from Isaac?

Moisture from Isaac’s remains will affect western Europe next week. However, no significant impact is expected.

Atmospheric conditions are expected to remain too hostile for significant energy to reach countries such as Spain and Portugal.

The biggest impact could be swell, which is expected to reach the Azores by this weekend.

On the islands, which lie more than 900 miles off the coast of Portugal, the remains will first be seen off mainland Europe.

The NHC is also tracking Hurricane Helene, which is expected to make landfall in Florida on Thursday evening, and Invest 98L, which is harmlessly located in the eastern tropical Atlantic. A new observation area has also been designated in the Caribbean Sea.

Invest 98L is expected to develop into a tropical depression or storm in the eastern Atlantic

Another area observed is a tropical disturbance called Invest 98L in the eastern tropical Atlantic.

According to the NHC, showers and thunderstorms became more organized Thursday afternoon along a tropical disturbance located several hundred miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

A tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form later Thursday or Friday as it moves west-west-northwest across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic. If Invest 98L actually develops into a tropical storm, it will be named Joyce.

Area to watch in the Caribbean Sea

According to the NHC, a low pressure area could form over the western Caribbean by the middle of next week.

Environmental conditions are expected to favor slow development as the system moves generally northwestward.

The NHC currently estimates developments over the next seven days to be minor.
