Yesterday was Wordle Wednesday, which means that in addition to our regular Wordle, I added a puzzle for all good puzzle solvers. Today I’ll give you the answer (which some of you guessed – good job!)

That was the puzzle:

There is a knight buried in London who was buried by a pope.

The fruit of his labor was a holy wrath.

You look for the orb that should be on his grave.

It speaks of rosy flesh and a fertilized womb.

The answer: an apple! This is from The Da Vinci Code and refers to Sir Isaac Newton, famous for his big ideas and the apple that inspired his theory of gravity.

I’m really not even sure where GRAIN came from as an opening guess. Sometimes words just come to mind and seem like good choices. However, today was exceptionally lucky. With three boxes and only four words left, I decided to make a thematic second guess: VEGAN. Unfortunately there is no hole-in-two for me. Still, only one possible word remained. WAGON for the win. Rock me, Mama, like a cartwheel. . .

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing 1 is worth 3 points; guessing 2 is worth 2 points; guessing 3 is worth 1 point; guessing 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; Guessing on 6 is -2 points and missing the wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If there is a tie you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or simply play for a new score every day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running list or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word “grain” comes from the Latin word Granumwhich means “seed” or “small particle”. It was entered as Old French Grain before it was adopted into Middle English with the same spelling. Originally, Granum referred to individual seeds or grains of cereal plants, but its meaning was expanded to include small particles, measurements (such as grains of salt or sand), and even textures in materials (such as wood grain). The root of Granum is associated with Proto-Indo-European
