Tim Walz’s favorite trade fair meal is a classic

When Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was nominated as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential candidate, pundits speculated that the move was designed to appeal to all-important swing state voters in the Midwest. Well, if there’s one thing the Midwest is known for besides corrupt politics, it’s state fairs. As a native Midwesterner (he was born in Nebraska), Walz is naturally a regular visitor to the Minnesota State Fair. In 2023, he spoke to a KEYC News reporter and revealed that his favorite food at the fair is quite popular. Walz went on record as saying, “I’m a corn dog guy,” admitting that he eats them year-round, not just when he’s at the fair (or on the campaign trail). In fact, he showed the camera that he was wearing socks with corn dog prints on them.

Walz, however, demonstrated a bipartisan spirit by not immediately dismissing the interviewer who expressed a preference for Pronto Pups. While Pronto Pups are typically different from corn dogs in that they are made with a flour-based batter rather than cornmeal, the Minnesota State Fair’s version contains corn. Walz, however, did not explain why he prefers corn dogs. He simply said, “That’s a little debatable,” and left it at that.

Walz and his running mate both like pork products from the State Fair

Corn dogs are, without question, one of the best fairground foods of all time, but Tim Walz has another fairground food he just can’t forget: a BLT offered at the Minnesota Farmer’s Union booth a few years ago. He described the sandwich as “a little different,” although he wasn’t quite sure what gave it that special something. The governor is a big fan of the Farmer’s Union’s food. “I’m always a little biased toward what they do there,” he said.

Walz’s running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, seems to have skipped the corn dogs when she visited the Iowa State Fair in 2019. Harris, who is a real foodie, opted for a pork chop on a stick instead. She seemed to enjoy it quite a bit, as can be seen in an Iowa PBS news clip where she takes a bite and rolls her eyes in delight. Harris even flipped pork chops on the grill once, telling the press that her favorite way to season pork chops is with ancho chiles, black pepper, garlic, paprika and salt. Giving cooking tips is pretty typical of her, as she also has a YouTube channel called “Cooking With Kamala.”
