Tigers: Playoff chances are at 91.1%, magic number drops again

The Tigers continued their impressive push into the postseason with a 7-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Wednesday night at Comerica Park, reducing their magic number to three.

Later on Wednesday, the Twins also beat the Marlins, keeping the Tigers’ magic number for a playoff spot at three.

The Tigers, who are 22-8 in their last 30 games, have a 91.1 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. They have not been to the playoffs since 2014.

Detroit could secure a playoff spot as early as Friday at 6:40 p.m. with a game against the White Sox at Comerica Park.

AL Wildcard Ranking

The top two division winners receive a bye to the Division Series. The other four teams play best-of-three series in the wildcard round.

The top four teams have all secured playoff spots: the Yankees (92-66), Orioles (88-70), Guardians (92-67) and Astros (86-73). The Guardians and Astros won the AL Central and AL West, respectively, while the Yankees and Orioles are still battling for the AL East title.

As things stand, the Astros would move into the wildcard round along with the following three top teams:

1. Orioles (88-70)

2.Royals (84-74)

3. Tigers (84-74)

4. Twins (82-76), 2 games back

5. Mariners (88-77), 2.5 games back

The Red Sox were eliminated from the playoff race on Wednesday with a loss to the Blue Jays.

(At) Twins 8, Marlins 3: Minnesota’s Manuel Margot scored from second base in the five-run seventh inning, one of four errors by Miami as the Twins rallied. Christian Vázquez’s sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning was thrown wide of first base, allowing Margot to score. Carlos Correa followed with an RBI double that scored Vázquez, and Carlos Santana added a three-run double as Minnesota ended a three-game losing streak and handed Miami its 100th loss of the season for the fourth time in franchise history.

Royals 3, (at) Nationals 0: Five Kansas City relief pitchers threw 6 2/3 innings of two-hit relief after starter Michael Lorenzen left early, Robbie Grossman hit a two-run double and the Royals defended their second AL wild-card spot. Michael Massey hit a run off DJ Herz (4-9) to help the Royals earn their second straight clean sheet after a season-high seven straight losses. Kansas City and Detroit are both tied at 84-74, but the Royals have the head-to-head advantage over the Tigers in the tiebreaker for the second wild-card spot.

Mariners 8, (at) Astros 1: Mitch Garver and Julio Rodríguez hit home runs and the Mariners took advantage of five Houston errors. Seattle (82-77) won for the fifth time in seven games and is trying to secure a wild-card spot in the AL. The Mariners trailed 1-0 before catching up in the sixth inning. Dylan Moore reached base on the first of four errors by rookie third baseman Shay Whitcomb, who came on in the fourth inning. Victor Robles worked a walk and Cal Raleigh hit a single with one out to load the bases. Justin Turner then extended his on-base streak to 20 straight games with his single on a line drive to left field that scored two runs.
