Thrive City will thrive even more

This week on the San Francisco dining scene, Fikscue Craft Barbecue and Kayah by Burma Love come to Chase Center’s Thrive City, and Brixton revamps its menu.

In case you missed this week’s big news, Nopa opens a fish restaurant called Nopa fishin the Ferry Building early next year. Nopa chef Laurence Jossel is teaming up with respected fishmonger Water2Table and its owner Joe Conte to open the self-service restaurant, which will also offer a fish market and takeout, in the former San Francisco Fish Market space, also known as Suite 31.

We have news of two new openings in Thrive City, the restaurant and retail complex next to Chase Center in San Francisco. One of them is Kayah by Burma Lovethe newest offshoot of Burma Superstar’s Burma Food Group. We knew Burma Love was planning a branch in the complex, but now we learn that it’s set to open in October and will focus on Southeast Asian-inspired street food. The restaurant has a full bar, indoor and outdoor dining options, and an outdoor lounge as well. The menu includes plenty of noodle dishes, as well as skewers cooked over a binchotan grill and snacks like chicken lollipops and a rainbow lettuce roll.

Based in Alameda Fikscue Craft Barbecue is also coming to Thrive City, the Chronicle reports today. The popular restaurant is known for its lines around the block, as well as its halal-smoked Texas-style barbecue meats and Indonesian dishes that also use that meat. At Fikscue’s first foray into San Francisco, you can expect dishes like Texas-style beef brisket, dino ribs, and beef coconut curry rendang. They’re aiming for an early 2025 opening and will share outdoor space with neighboring Harmonic Brewing.

Thrive City, which has been half empty since its pre-pandemic debut, will finally be filled next year, with the upcoming openings of Pizzeria Che FicoAnd Mr Sisig.

Also in Dogpatch, a pop-up that took place at Midway in February, Sister, mother, old womanis back in business, starting tonight, August 16, and running select weekends through November, including next weekend. Chef Ollie Walleck will once again serve comfort food with a little Midwestern influence, including some new dishes like gnocchi alla romana with snow peas, romanesco and pesto, and cherry-braised short ribs with broccolini and cherry tomatoes. Reservations can be found here.

And over in Cow Hollow, The Brixton is reopening this week with a renewed focus on food — after becoming more of a bar during the pandemic years. As Eater reports, the menu will once again feature gastropub fare, as it did when Brixton opened over a decade ago. But now consulting chef Joey Altman has added a selection of “Osaka-style sushi snacks.”

Unfortunately, the Instagram-famous Japanese soufflé pancake shop in the Stonestown Galleria is closing. Gram Café & Pancakes will close after Aug. 27, the Chronicle reports, but owner Dorothy Tso says she has plans to open a new location elsewhere in the Bay Area sometime next year.
