Three food and beverage experts share their experiences

NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / August 19, 2024 / When Kate WarringtonDuring the pandemic, her busy job in higher education slowed down, and she took the opportunity to reflect on what she wanted to accomplish professionally. Although she was climbing the career ladder in her field, she had felt an “itch” in her career for years.

After some reflection, she realized, “I want to do something every day that has a global impact and know that my work impacts the well-being of others.” She was ready for a change.

This led her to the food and beverage industry. Warrington manages the Technical Training Center at Tetra Pak’s campus in Denton, Texas, where engineers working with food processing and packaging equipment receive high-quality, hands-on training to ensure the equipment runs under optimal conditions.

Determination is an essential part of their daily work. “Tetra Pak is special because we all care about people and the environment,” says Warrington. “We all know that what we do is so important for the world, for the environment, for people, and that makes this a very, very special place.”

Warrington is not alone. Edelman’s 2023 Trust Barometer shows that people are looking for work that has a higher purpose and can make a difference in society. Sixty-nine percent of respondents said that having a social impact is a strong expectation or a deal breaker when choosing a job. At a recent event hosted by Females in Food, Warrington and two other food and drink executives shared how they found meaning in their careers.

Being part of an industry that supports life through nutrition can align with people’s desire to impact the health and well-being of others in meaningful ways.

Tia Glave She always knew she wanted to be an engineer but found more traditional engineering careers unfulfilling. She never thought there could be opportunities for engineers in the food and beverage sector until she attended a National Society of Black Engineers conference.

“When I got into food, I realized I have a passion for nurturing other people’s skills and helping them find their place, and then nurturing and nurturing them to become the best version of themselves,” she says. “I always tell people that it’s fun to work in the food industry! It’s fun to eat. It’s a lot of fun from a food safety perspective, too.”

As co-founder of Catalyst, a coaching and leadership development company for people in the food and beverage industry, Glave helps food industry companies of all sizes with food safety, quality, regulatory, operations and maintenance issues.

Abigail Dagadu finds meaning in working in the food and beverage industry because of the impact food has on health and well-being. Originally planning to be a doctor, she has always had a passion for food. After an internship at a food flavoring company, she realized she craved the creativity this field offered.

“We all know that food can make people feel better or cheer them up when the day isn’t going so well,” says Dagadu. “As a food scientist, I can still help people feel better. That’s why I originally became interested in medicine.”

As Research and Development Manager at Tetra Pak, she explores ways to improve the taste and nutritional value of her customers’ products and ensures food safety is guaranteed throughout the value chain. “I’m not just developing a product. I’m developing something that can be used therapeutically, improves wellbeing and brings people together to celebrate,” says Dagadu.

From engineering to education and everything in between, the food and beverage industry offers a variety of career opportunities for those looking for meaning. No matter what path people take to get into the food and beverage industry, they can find meaning in how the industry contributes to people’s lives every day.
