A story by Three Days Grace and Adam Gontier

After becoming one of the most successful rock bands over the course of three studio albums, Three Days Grace released their fourth studio album Transit of Venus on October 2, 2012. But the group was not far from supporting the album when Gontier announced his plan to leave the band in January 2013. The announcement came weeks before the band’s planned co-headline tour with Shinedown.

The group quickly replaced Gontier and brought in My Darkest Days singer Matt Walst, brother of bassist Brad Walst, to fill the void. After the breakup, Walst came on board full-time and Three Days Grace continued their radio success through three more albums – Human, outsider And Explosions.

Meanwhile, Gontier resurfaced with the band Saint Asonia, which also included Staind guitarist Mike Mushok. The group has released two full-length studio albums and two EPs for 2022, and has also enjoyed continued regular radio play throughout their run.

In July 2022, both Matt and Brad Walst were inducted into their high school’s Hall of Honor along with their classmate Gontier. This seemed to reopen the doors of communication.

In 2023, Gontier discussed reconnecting with his former Three Days Grace bandmates when he guested on the band Loudwire Nights Radio show.

“It felt great, man,” Gontier told Chuck Armstrong. “It’s been so long. Over the last year or so we’ve been talking a lot about getting together and doing something like this. It felt pretty great to sing a few songs on stage with these guys. It was pretty awesome.” moment definitely.

“They came through Huntsville and I live in Nashville and just asked me if I wanted to come on stage and do something,” Gontier said. “Of course I agreed. It was a lot of fun. We haven’t really been in the same room together in about ten years – it was definitely a great experience.” Check out more of the chat below and revisit another recent appearance at Gontier Loudwire Nights here.
