This major change to the Steam store is designed to make premium games easier to discover by giving free and demo games their own store pages.”

Steam has undergone some serious changes today, and one change promises success for both the pay-for games and the free-to-play games that are shooting up the Steam charts. Combined, the two categories can get in each other’s way, but they’re now separated, making browsing easier.

When you launch Steam now, you should see a new tab on the store page called “Trending Free”! This is full of free games, demos, and benchmarking tools that are currently popular on the digital store. The New and Trending tab should now be full of premium titles, including some that would otherwise have been hidden under a flood of free content.

The reason this is actually pretty good for Steam and its users is twofold. First, let’s look at the benchmark demo of The Black Myth: Wukong, which is currently running well. Previously, it would have taken up a spot on the main “New and Trending” tab on Steam. But it’s not actually a game. It’s a test demo so people can make sure their rig can run the game, and so they can learn how well they can run it. Well, this benchmark demo still takes the spotlight in its own tab, but it doesn’t take the position of actually games.

If you’re specifically looking for the hottest new free games on Steam, there’s a single tab that will help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Instead of scrolling past a bunch of new AAA releases for $60, you can head to a dedicated tab that only features free experiences. It’s a win-win.
