Thiruvananthapuram Airport’s Zero Waste to Landfill model gains national recognition

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Limited (TIAL) has been conferred with the prestigious Pollution Control Waste Recycling Excellence Award by the Greentech Foundation. The award is given for TIAL’s outstanding performance in implementing zero waste to landfill.

Waste types included plastic, wet and dry municipal waste, and some hazardous waste. Waste generation patterns and management practices at TIAL are based on the Cradle to Cradle concept. TIAL takes a holistic approach to asset and environmental management and adopts best practices including innovative use of biogas for energy generation, effective management of wet waste through organic converters, maintenance of compliance-related records and proactive stakeholder engagement through awareness programs.

Strategic mapping of waste suppliers and strict monitoring and compliance with agreements ensured that waste channelling is efficient and in line with the airport’s sustainability goals.
