“There is significant smoke damage throughout the area”

A Reddit user’s post about a flooded Walmart sparked an important discussion about corporate waste and missed opportunities for sustainability.

What happens?

After a flood at a Walmart store in Surrey, British Columbia, shelves full of seemingly undamaged products were marked for disposal. A concerned shopper posted images from the Daily Hive on Reddit showing shelves full of items marked “READY FOR DISPOSAL.”

While acknowledging Walmart’s insurance coverage and company policies, the Reddit user expressed regret over the obvious waste, pointing out that many items could potentially be salvaged or donated after a simple cleaning.

“I understand that Walmart has insurance to cover losses and has to follow company policies, but this is all so wasteful… it makes me a little sad,” the Reddit user wrote.

Why is retail waste a concern?

This situation highlights the larger problem of corporate waste, which contributes to the overheating of our planet.

If still usable products are thrown away unnecessarily, this leads to increased production and transport costs and ultimately disposal – all of which have a significant impact on the environment.

Excess plastic and non-plastic waste in retail not only burdens landfills, but also represents a missed opportunity to conserve resources and reduce carbon pollution. Furthermore, it exacerbates social problems by throwing away potentially useful items that could benefit communities in need.

Is Walmart doing anything about it?

Although Walmart’s corporate office has not issued a statement regarding this incident, the company has made efforts to improve its sustainability practices. Walmart is committed to becoming a regenerative company with the goal of protecting, restoring and sustainably managing natural resources.

The affected Walmart posted the following message outside the store: “On Thursday evening, emergency crews extinguished the fires at our Walmart store in Surrey-Guildford. Fortunately, all employees and customers were unharmed. We would like to thank all first responders who responded to the fires…

“…parts of the store are currently closed as we carry out the necessary cleanup and repairs following the arson. The affected departments will reopen as soon as possible while we work to ensure the areas are safe and meet the standards our customers expect and deserve.”

Local fire chief Darren Major told Daily Hive that the flooding was likely caused by a deliberately set fire, which caused significant smoke damage throughout the store.

“It generated a lot of smoke,” Major told the Daily Hive. “And there’s significant smoke damage throughout the area, which I believe caused Walmart itself to be closed for quite a while.”

What is generally being done to combat retail waste?

Fortunately, there are growing efforts to address the problem of retail waste and promote more sustainable practices beyond Walmart.

Many retailers partner with local charities to donate unsold or slightly damaged goods, keeping usable items out of landfill.

Some companies are looking for creative ways to reuse or refurbish products that would otherwise be thrown away. Modern technology allows stores to better predict demand, reducing excess inventory and potential waste.

Retailers are increasingly educating their customers on how to properly care for their products and on repair options to extend their lifespan. In addition, some regions are introducing laws to prevent the unnecessary disposal of still usable goods.

By encouraging responsible corporate behavior, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future. Remember, every little action counts. Every choice we make helps create a cleaner, healthier world for us and future generations.
