The working week begins with some rain and thunder

Rochester, NY (WHAM) – The weather this weekend in WNY looked like October and it felt like the work week was starting off on the cool side as well.

There will also be some showers and thunderstorms on Monday. The last part of the storm system that kept us cool over the weekend will move through the area tomorrow afternoon.

This low pressure system is expected to produce localized thunderstorms in the Rochester area this afternoon and early evening.

While most areas will see a shower or two, we will also need to watch how the thunderstorm potential develops during the afternoon.

At first glance, the atmosphere appears to be unstable enough to allow for brief, strong storms in the afternoon.

Any storms would be associated with locally gusty winds exceeding 65 km/h, the possibility of hail, cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, and locally heavy rain.

Rainfall will be very limited in some areas, but amounts of 1/2 inch or more are possible.

In isolated areas, totals could even reach 1 inch, especially in areas south of Rochester into the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region.

From Monday night into Tuesday morning, the risk of rain and thunderstorms will subside and the rest of the working week is expected to remain dry.

From Tuesday onwards it will not only be drier, but also pleasantly warmer. From Wednesday to Sunday the summer air will return to the Great Lakes and New England.

From Thursday, daily maximum temperatures are expected to rise again to over 26 degrees.

The warm air will be accompanied by rain-free weather at the end of next week thanks to a high pressure area over the region.
