The Vikings are 4-0 after a 31:29 win

This is the live report from the Vikings’ Week 4 game against the Green Bay Packers. Check back here regularly for live updates and analysis from Lambeau Field:

GREEN BAY, Wis. – In the second quarter Sunday, the Vikings had their largest lead at Lambeau Field since 1973.

Although they forced two turnovers in the fourth quarter, they still had to recover an onside kick to end the game.

But wins, whether they come via blowouts or one-score games, count the same, and the Vikings have now won two straight games at Lambeau Field. They were coming off a 31-29 win over the Packers on Sunday, in a game in which Kevin O’Connell won three tackles, Sam Darnold threw three touchdowns and the Vikings had four takeaways against Jordan Love.

Aaron Jones, who ran the apron around Lambeau Field to high-five Packers fans before the game, finished his first game against his former team with 22 carries for 93 yards. Darnold completed 20 of 28 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Why it happened: The Vikings were better in every way, building a 28-0 lead in the first half. Sam Darnold picked apart the Packers’ defense from clean pockets, while Green Bay forced Jordan Love into two interceptions in the first half. The first real mistake of the game came when Jalen Nailor, who was returning punts while Brandon Powell was out with an injury, lost a punt in the sun, setting up the Packers’ first touchdown. The Packers’ two second-half touchdowns came with the help of an interception by Darnold, one play after he was knocked down by Rashan Gary, but the Vikings came up with two more takeaways when they needed them.

What it means: The Vikings are 4-0 in the first month of a schedule that should include its toughest stretch early in the season. They have a two-game lead over the Packers in the NFC North and could have a two-game lead over everyone else if the Lions lose on Monday night. They are 4-0 for the first time since 2016 and could be undefeated with another win before the bye. They will have some concerns about the way their defense played in the second half, but being unbeaten after a month puts them in a great position.

Course of the game: With the Vikings leading 21-0 in the first half, the Packers continued to play man coverage against Justin Jefferson, who fended off a grab by Keisean Nixon and hauled in Sam Darnold’s third touchdown pass of the day. That gave the Vikings a 28-0 lead.
