The Tigers can secure a place in the playoffs as early as Friday evening

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Detroit Tigers have a chance to clinch the team’s first playoff berth since 2014 on Friday night at Comerica Park. Detroit’s magic number dropped to one after the Tigers beat the Rays 4-3 and the Marlins beat the Twins 8-6 in 13 innings on Thursday.

Detroit (85-74) hosts the Chicago White Sox (39-120), one of the worst teams in MLB history, in the final three games of the regular season. With a win in the weekend series against the White Sox, the Tigers officially punch their ticket to the postseason. Detroit and Chicago meet on Friday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m

Even with another loss to the Twins, the Tigers can still come away with a win this weekend. Minnesota hosts Baltimore for three games starting Friday night. The Tigers expect to sell out Comerica Park this weekend as excitement surrounding the team and playoff odds continue to grow.

Detroit has a 99.2% chance of making the playoffs as of Friday morning, according to FanGraphs. Detroit is the hottest team in baseball with a (30-11) record since August 10, when their chance of reaching the postseason was 0.2%.

The Tigers remain tied with the Kansas City Royals for the second AL Wild Card spot and are three games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place with just three games remaining.

If Detroit makes the postseason, their AL Wild Card series would begin on Tuesday, October 1st.
