The sex scene with Florence Pugh went “further” than intended

In the upcoming romantic film We Live in Time, Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star as a married couple, so they had to film some heated scenes – one of which went a bit over the top.

During an interview with “Happy Sad Confused” podcast host Josh Horowitz on Friday night in New York City, Garfield recalled a time during filming when he and Pugh didn’t hear their cameraman say “cut,” so they just kept going. Apparently things got so heated that the cameraman stopped filming and turned away.

“We’re doing the first shot of this very intimate, passionate sex scene. And it’s a closed set, which means it’s just me and Florence together in a room and the cameraman, who is our cameraman, is a very nice man named Stewart,” Garfield said during the conversation, according to posts posted on social media recordings. “The scene becomes passionate and we’ve choreographed it and gone into it, so to speak, and we go a little further than we should just because we’ve never heard ‘Cut’ and it feels safe and we’re like, ‘Okay, we.’ move on to the next step and next we let it continue.’”

After a while, Garfield said he and Pugh “telepathically said to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a long take.'” Garfield then stood up in front of the audience to reenact what the two saw as they finished the scene.

“I look up and in the corner is Stewart and our boom operator,” Garfield said to laughter from the crowd. “Stewart has the camera at his side and has turned into the wall.”

Directed by John Crowley, We Live in Time follows Almut (Pugh), an aspiring chef, and Tobias (Garfield), a decades-long divorcee, as the two fall in love after a surprising encounter. The film’s official logline states: “Through snapshots of their lives together – falling in love, building a house, starting a family – a difficult truth is revealed that shakes their foundations. As they embark on a path challenged by the limitations of time, they learn to appreciate every moment of the unconventional path their love story has taken.”

“We Live in Time” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is scheduled for a limited release in the U.S. on October 11th at A24. The UK premiere will take place on January 1st via Studiocanal.
