The passion of Eagles fans is the best thing about this NFL beat

play

“Fly, eagle, fly.”

You hear that refrain at every Eagles home game. That’s because the Philadelphia Eagles are ingrained in our culture, our mindset, and yes, even our work.

The same thing happens when the Eagles are on the road: The green-clad fans nod to each other as they pass each other on the street and shout “Go Birds!” as they continue on their way.

I will never forget the crowds of Eagles fans who overran London pubs six years ago when the Eagles played there, chanting “EAGLES! Eagles!”, which no doubt amazed the locals drinking their beers. On the other hand, the well-known football hooligans might have appreciated the Eagles’ passionate fan base.

I’m sure it will be that way again when the Eagles and their fans “take over” Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday, September 6th for their regular season opener against the Green Bay Packers.

So it’s really the passion of the fans that excites me most when I cover the Eagles for Delaware Online/The News Journal, part of the USA Today network. You want to know everything about the players, the personalities, the strategies and the behind-the-scenes machinations.

It’s my job and my pleasure to lay that out for you in any way I can, whether it’s a column deciphering what quarterback Jalen Hurts meant when he said he and head coach Nick Sirianni were “in a great spot” before adding that they weren’t on the same page last season, or Jason Kelce’s tearful farewell in his word and video.

Here at Delaware Online, we have so many platforms for your Eagles fandom.

That includes our “Eye on the Eagles” newsletter, delivered to your email inbox every Friday. The newsletter prepares you for the upcoming game and offers a look back at the week’s news and the unbelievable stories, like the saga of Dom DiSandro, the Eagles’ head of security, who was ejected from a game for shoving a San Francisco 49ers player on the sideline.

You can also read my stories, columns and analysis here on Delaware Online and in print in the Delaware News Journal. And of course, you can follow me on social media platforms X (@Mfranknfl) and Instagram (@delawareonline). You can reach me there or via email at [email protected].

Here’s a quick Q&A to prepare you for our coverage of the Eagles this season:

Question: What would you like to tell Delaware about coverage of professional sporting events in 2024?

Answer: I’ve covered college teams in the past, but the pros are the best of the best athletes. I’ve found that many players, despite making millions and millions of dollars, have a unique determination to succeed. I’m happy to learn that AJ Brown is constantly striving to get better, even though he’s already one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.

What roles did you have in journalism before covering the NFL?

In my journalism career, I have covered high school football in Florida, including future NFL players; the UConn men’s basketball team in the 1990s; and the Phillies, 76ers, University of Delaware football and basketball, and many other sports in my 25 years at Delaware Online.

What needs to happen for the Eagles to lift the Lombardi Trophy in February?

A lot, but all of it is well within the Eagles’ reach. Hurts can and should lead one of the NFL’s best offenses with Brown and DeVonta Smith, not to mention free agent running back Saquon Barkley. The Eagles don’t need to be elite on defense. They just need to be slightly above average, which they didn’t even come close to last season, when they ranked 30th out of 32 teams in points allowed per game and 31st in pass defense.

The potential is there. And so are the stumbling blocks. Injuries could play a big role. Likewise, the offense and defense may not live up to expectations with new coordinators. And all of that could lead to Sirianni’s downfall.

So read on, because no matter what happens – good or bad – there will be no shortage of excitement this Eagles season.
