The overwhelmed Panthers are defeated by the Hurricanes 8-2

The fourth preseason game was a game to remember as the Florida Panthers were defeated 8-2 by the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes have built a roster heavy with NHL regulars while the Panthers have not, and it was clear from the start that a one-sided defeat was in the offing.

Seth Jarvis defeated Spencer Knight twice and Josiah Slavin, Sean Walker, Jordan Staal, Jack Roslovic, William Carrier and Andrei Svechnikov also scored goals for the home team.

After playing hard in the first half, the Panthers trailed by five points before Oliver Okuliar redirected Mike Benning’s shot past Frederik Andersen with 3:27 left in the second half. Zac Dalpe had the second assist on the power play goal.

AJ Greer scored for the second straight time when he blocked Benning’s shot from Andersen, which went the distance for Carolina 42 seconds into the final frame, making it 6-2. This time the second helper went to Ben Steeves.

Knight played the first two periods and conceded six goals on 20 shots. Cooper Black was between the goals for the final twenty minutes, conceding goals to Carrier and Svechnikov. He finished with seven saves.

Strong play from Benning, who, in addition to his two assists, also had a shot on goal and a goal. He was one of two Panthers defenders, along with Jaycob Megna, who ended up with an even rating.

Tobias Björnfot and Mikulas Hovorka were each minus four in the game.

The same two teams meet tonight at Amerant Bank Arena. Expect a change in roster strength as we should see a majority of Florida’s NHL roster tonight.
