The Pittsburgh Steelers did a lot to revamp their offense during the 2024 offseason, but most of it was done on a tight budget.

Like any inexpensive DIY project, we’ll soon find out if it’s built to last or if it won’t be long before the whole thing falls apart.

Almost every aspect of the offense could be different this season.

The Steelers have replaced Matt Canada as offensive coordinator with Arthur Smith. Canada was relieved of his duties last November, while Smith was fired as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons at the end of the season.

Smith should bring a completely different philosophy to the offense. Even his personnel usage last season was the complete opposite of that of Canada and the Steelers.

Pittsburgh was sixth in usage of 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end) and ranked 25th in EPA for those players, according to Sumer Sports. The Falcons were first in usage of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends).

Then there’s the quarterback change to consider. The Steelers are only spending $1.2 million on starting quarterback Russell Wilson. That’s an incredible value if Smith can get him to play well in his 35th season, but there’s no guarantee.

It will also be interesting to know if Pittsburgh will use their new backup Justin Fields in any capacity.

The Steelers are good enough on defense to be a tough opponent to face, even if their offense is average, and the unit is one of the most radically changed in the league.

There’s a lot to learn about the group as they face Smith’s former Falcons team in Week 1.
