The Harris-Trump debate – how it took place

Here are five things to watch for when Kamala Harris and Donald Trump meet in Philadelphia at 9 p.m.

Who will look more presidential?

The spotlight will be particularly on Harris because Trump is better known to voters. The former president will continue to be under scrutiny as he struggled to adjust to his new rival and relied on personal attacks against the vice president.

Who will define Harris?

Both candidates will try something simple during the debate: define Harris for an electorate that knows much less about her than about Trump.

Will Attorney Harris prosecute felon Trump?

Harris has made her experience as a prosecutor a central part of her political identity, and she was more willing than Biden to attack Trump over his criminal convictions during the campaign.

Whose economic vision will resonate?

Harris and Trump will lay out their competing economic visions for how to reduce the country’s high cost of living. Trump wants to cut taxes beyond the tax cuts he enacted in 2017, increase energy production, cut government spending and enlist Elon Musk to pursue aggressive deregulation. Harris wants to raise taxes on the wealthy and large corporations to expand the social safety net and give child care tax credits and tax breaks to small business owners.

Who will take a stronger position on the hot topics of immigration and abortion?

Trump is on the defensive on abortion rights and has struggled to define his position. Harris, a strong advocate for reproductive rights, will try to link the former president to the Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe vs. Wade decision in 2022. The ex-president will try to scandalize the Biden administration for an influx of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border under its watch.
