Week 4’s “Thursday Night Football” matchup marks another chapter in the long rivalry between NFC East foes New York and Dallas. The Giants and Cowboys have played each other 124 times in NFL history since 1960 and have won nine Super Bowl titles together.

Tonight marks the first of two meetings between the teams in 2024, and both have struggled for three weeks. New York has the fourth-worst offense, but top rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers has been a bright spot this year. Dallas has the third-worst scoring defense, but Trevon Diggs has been one of the better cornerbacks in the league, according to data from Sports Information Solutions (SIS).

This is the first time the two have faced off in the NFL, but there has already been some feuding between them. Here’s why a rivalry is brewing between Nabers and Diggs:

What started the rivalry between Trevon Diggs and Malik Nabers?

Nabers – the No. 6 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft – was asked during the offseason which cornerback he was most excited about. He said Diggs.

Diggs responded to Nabers’ interview clip, referencing Dallas’ 13-1 record in its last 14 games against New York.

Nabers responded with a coffin emoji to a video posted on X, using his interview response for a Diggs hype video. Diggs also responded to this video with a ninja emoji.

Nabers later said he complimented Diggs by calling him the top cornerback he was looking forward to. He told Giants beat writer Dan Duggan that Diggs is a great corner and it will be a great matchup.

When asked Tuesday, Nabers downplayed the burgeoning rivalry, saying he didn’t want to discuss it and wanted to focus on the game.

Diggs has traditionally not followed the opponent’s top receiver, but that could change this week. Nabers leads the league in scoring (37) and ranks fifth in receiving yards (271). He is the most important weapon in the Giants’ offense this year.
