The Fantastic Four’s new costumes have one of the best interpretations of their logo yet

Summary

  • The new uniforms in Fantastic Four #23 serve a purpose: They can be shrunk to examine mysterious particles at the preion level.
  • Equipped with helmets for breathing and protection, the sleek grey and blue suits are perfect for exploring the smallest corners of the universe.
  • The Fantastic Four’s adaptability and ability to tackle impossible questions make them one of Marvel’s most versatile and significant superhero teams.

Warning: Spoilers for Fantastic Four #23!!Since they entered the Marvel Universe as the first “public” superhero team, Fantastic Four have changed their looks many times. Usually, new uniforms are about more than just aesthetics, and their latest design has a specific purpose. To shrink down to “preion level” and investigate a mysterious particle, the FF have upgraded to one of their best looks yet.

In Fantastic Four #23 by Ryan North, Carlos Gomez, Jesus Aburtov and Joe Caramagna, Earth is suddenly bombarded by a rain of objects capable of penetrating the Invisible Woman’s shields and destroying the Human Torch. Rather than raise the alarm, Reed Richards realizes it’s time to explore – on the unimaginably small Preion Plane.

The Fantastic Four put on their new costumes and prepare for the start

After the rest of the team insists on accompanying him, the four put on their new uniforms to shrink down and investigate the “OMG particles” that continue to bombard the planet. The fresh suits feature an elegant combination of grey and blue, rounded off by a bright white “4” design in the middle.

The Fantastic Four get a new design for a new mission

It seems there’s no corner of the universe that’s off-limits to the Fantastic Four, even the smallest ones. Still, it stands to reason that the team would need extra protective gear when taking the Reducta-Craft to the extreme. Their new look comes with helmets that allow them to breathe safely even at pre-ionic sizes, and has the added benefit of padded shoulders and knees for unexpected scrapes. It’s the perfect mix of “hazmat suit” and “space suit,” which seems especially fitting considering that the OMG particles are actually spaceships with aliens as accommodation.

The Fantastic Four usually wear some version of their black and blue uniforms, but they have switched things up on several occasions. From the shockingly white Future Foundation uniforms they wore after Johnny’s death to The downfall of the Fantastic Four‘s sudden pop of red, they’ve been known to mix things up when there’s a reason to. The only reliable feature is the “4” logo in the middle, and the new uniform might take the prize for its glowing update. With the world around them rapidly changing, vampires walking in the sun, and Doom taking up the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, the FF was due an update – even if it’s only temporary.

The Fantastic Four are one of Marvel’s most adaptable teams

While the Avengers and X-Men change members, the Fantastic Four is usually made up of the same faces. A few heroes like Spider-Man or Crystal Amaquelin help out in extenuating circumstances, but it’s largely down to Sue, Reed, Johnny, and Ben. Luckily, the FF’s penchant for exploration and finding seemingly impossible solutions to equally impossible questions goes a long way toward keeping them relevant. Whether it’s impossibly small aliens or Doctor Doom becoming the world’s highest magical authority, they’re always ready to plunge right into the heart of the problem. Now The Fantastic Four have introduced a uniform that reflects their adaptability.
