The Broadway star of “Waitress” and “Into The Woods” was 48

It is stunning and sad news that Gavin Creel, one of Broadway’s most beloved and celebrated leading men, died today in Manhattan, just two months after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma. He was 48.

His death was confirmed by his partner Alex Temple Ward. Creel had been undergoing treatment at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering after being diagnosed with cancer in July.

One of Broadway’s finest musical theater performers, Creel made his Broadway debut in the lead role of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in 2002, earning a Tony Award nomination, a performance he would repeat seven years later in a performance as Claude would become a signature performance in “The” 2009 Broadway revival of hair.

From 2012 to 2015, he played the lead role of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon, a role he reprized in an Olivier Award-winning performance for the West End production of the musical.

In 2017, he received a Tony Award for his performance as Cornelius in Broadway’s Hello, Dolly! opposite Bette Midler.

His other stage appearances include: La Cage aux Folles (2004), She loves me (2016), waitress (2019) and Into the forest (2022), among many others. TV credits include American horror story And Central Parkboth in 2021.
