A Sunday with rain showers and thunderstorms was no problem at this year’s ox roast.

“The residents here have persevered, the rain has not deterred anyone,” said Sheryl Landgraf, chairwoman of Dewitt Ox Roast.

And all this for an event that has been a fixture in the community of Dewitt for decades.

“The OX roast has been an institution in this community for 78 years,” said Landgraf.

Sunday’s event included an ice cream eating contest, various rides and games, the opportunity to use firefighting equipment and a diving pool.

For downtown Dewitt residents like Stella Gallagher, this year has been a good year.

“I loved it, I loved it. I hadn’t slept in about a week and a half, but I loved it,” Gallagher said.

Gallagher said the Ox Roast celebrates the community, the arts, the police and the children of the Dewitt community.

“I look forward to this every year. In fact, I volunteered for the arts festival this year when we needed a new committee. It was so important to me that we step up and continue the tradition,” Gallagher said.

The festival committee was new this year and it is hoped that the event will continue next year.

“We love the Ox Festival and love our city,” said Landgraf.
