The 28-car accident at Talladega marks new ground in NASCAR history

The sun always comes up and there are always at least a dozen cars in NASCAR Talladega Superspeedway. However, at the YellaWood 500 on Sunday, an unprecedentedly large accident occurred in the final laps. This edition of the great There were 28 cars involved, a new Cup Series record.

Austin Cindric was at the front of the field with five laps to go. The Penske No. 2 Ford Mustang was too far forward. With no drafting partner, the pack got Cindric quickly. Brad Keselowski attempted to push the No. 2 Mustang and crashed off-center into Cindric’s rear bumper. Cindric spun on the back straight in front of the entire field. There was little you could do to avoid joining the pile of spinning machines. Cindric told Racer later:

“I just got turned around at the front of the field,” Cindric said. “Unfortunately, Daytona ended like this for us and I think that means we have really fast race cars and great performance. As a leader, I’ve tried to be as predictable as possible when it comes to kickoffs and that’s just a real shame. I don’t really feel like complaining about what happened or whose fault it is; It doesn’t matter.

Cindric finished 32nd in the race as the survivors battled for victory. The winner of the 2023 Daytona 500 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. crossed the finish line first in a photo finish and won by six thousandths of a second ahead of Keselowski. The tight end was the eighth shortest ever. The superlatives are becoming increasingly blasé, with the top two in the record book taking place at the beginning of the year Kansas Speedway And Atlanta Motor Speedway.
