Tesla Inc TSL engineer Wes Morrill went to X on Sunday to explain to Cybertruck owners why they can’t use the vehicle’s power outlets while Supercharging, and it seems to be a problem that isn’t easily fixed.
What happened: “The AC/DC converter used to convert AC from the grid to DC to charge the HV battery is the same hardware used to generate the AC grid you use for your onboard power,” Morrill wrote on X.
Supercharging feeds direct current directly into the vehicle battery, shutting down the voltage converter hardware and preventing the driver from using the sockets.
While it is possible to fix this problem, developing the solution “will take time,” added the Cybertruck’s lead engineer.
In response to another user who wondered why this wasn’t considered when the vehicle was being designed, Morill said, “If you’re charging with AC, you can probably plug anything that needs power into the same grid that’s powering the truck. It’s a pretty small use case if you have to charge with AC and grid with the truck at the same time.”
Why it is important: The Cybertruck has multiple outlets for charging phones or tools in the front seat, back seat and cargo bed. The 120V/240V outlets in the cargo bed can also allow the Cybertruck to charge another electric vehicle or run tools, according to Tesla.
Tesla began delivering the Cybertruck in November 2023 and is currently ramping up production with the goal of delivering 250,000 units annually starting in 2025. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that production, not demand, is the biggest hurdle to increasing Cybertruck deliveries.
According to Kelley Blue Book estimates, Tesla sold 8,755 Cybertrucks in the U.S. in the second quarter, compared to 2,803 in the first quarter.
